Holocaust Survivor
Renate Breslow lived a happy life as a Jewish child in Kirchheim, Germany. However, in 1933, suddenly Renate’s and her family’s lives were endangered, when Hitler became the German Chancellor. Eventually, Renate and her mother were able to board the S.S. St. Louis to escape Nazi Germany; however, the ship was not allowed to dock in Cuba nor the U.S. The captain had to head back to Europe where many of the passengers ended up losing their lives due to Nazi persecution. Renate and her mother were miraculously saved and eventually united with her father in America.
Naftali “Tuli” Deutsch - Part 1
Survivor of 5 Concentration Camps
Naftali “Tuli” Deutsch was born in 1931, in Kimyat, Ruthenia (then Czechoslovakia), a small village in the Carpathian Mountains. He was one of nine brothers and sisters. His father was in charge of Jewish education in the area, and he studied with him at home for six to seven hours every day. He taught him the scriptures and the importance of conforming his life to them, a value Tuli still cherishes today. In 1944 the Jews in Kimyat were ordered to report to the synagogue from which they were taken to the local ghetto Nagyszőllős. Eventually Tuli, along with most of his family, was deported to Auschwitz. Upon arrival at Auschwitz, Tuli was separated from his parents and siblings and sent to a labor camp. His parents and some other family members perished in the Holocaust, but his father’s last message to him was an exhortation that Tuli would survive, and he would help others. At the age of twelve, Tuli was transported to Mauthausen, where he was incarcerated in one of its sub-camps, Guzen II. He miraculously survived harrowing experiences in the camps and was liberated near Linz, Austria in May of 1945. Tuli published his incredible story in A Holocaust Survivor: In the Footsteps of His Past.
