The Western Wall is the only part of the Second Temple that remains standing today. Therefore, the wall is a holy site and an important place of prayer for the Jews. The wall has been a destination for pilgrimages ever since the destruction of the Second Temple except for a brief period when the wall was under Jordanian rule. Although the exact dimensions of the original wall are not known, it is believed that a considerable portion of the wall is still underground. A section of stones was added to the top of the wall after the temple was destroyed. Although it is controversial, some Jews are pressing for more archeological excavations of the wall and the surrounding Temple Mount area.
